Boxing gloves - purpose, use and characteristics
The gloves used by boxers are specialist constructions (made of leather, synthetic materials and foam), whose main purpose is to cushion impact and protect the bones (the metacarpals and the wrist). The thick and sometimes multi-layered foam inside “absorbs” the energy of thrown punches, which reduces the risk of injury - both for the person throwing the punch and the one receiving it (so, in practice, for both sides of the fist).
They work a little “differently” than in mixed martial arts. Firstly, because the fingers are fully covered. And secondly, because they provide a much higher level of protection (thanks to their padding).
They are divided mainly by weight, given in ounces, which often also defines their intended use. For example, slightly lighter models (up to 10 oz) are used mainly in competition. For bag training, gloves weighing 10 - 14 oz work well, while for sparring people reach for 14 or 16 oz gloves. More foam means a higher level of protection - for you and your partner or opponent.

How do you choose the right boxing gloves?
The key factors are intended use and size. If you mainly train on the bag, choose a model weighing 10 - 12 oz. For regular sparring, go for heavier gloves (14 - 16 oz), which better protect your partner from the effects of harder punches. Remember that gloves are worn over hand wraps - measure the size with them in mind.
